The need for a competent and trustworthy partner to help first-time authors navigate the world of publishing and marketing a book led to the formation of Crown Publishing. There’s a reason you’re reading this right now. It might be that you don’t want to wait for a traditional publisher to respond to your emails, or that you just want greater control over the design and feel of your final published book.
Traditional publishers typically follow the practice of printing books in bulk, often 1000+ copies. This mass production is one of the key reasons why debut authors and writers are charged substantial fees, sometimes reaching lakhs. To overcome this limitation, Crown Publishing Publication adopts the Print on Demand (PoD) approach. With PoD, your book is stored with Crown Publishing, and copies are printed only when demanded. This allows for the publication of even a single copy at a time, eliminating the financial burden of bulk printing and making the book publishing process more accessible and cost-effective.
As the book is available on Print on Demand (PoD), there is a production cost associated with each book. In addition to the production cost, there is a margin for the distribution share. Therefore, the cost required to produce a single copy at a time and make it available for sale across the distribution network, while ensuring optimum royalty for authors, is known as the Minimum Selling Price (MSP). Since A5 books (5″x8″) are convenient, handy, and cost-efficient in production, we recommend them. However, for academic and research publications with more than 100 pages, A4 size (6″x9″ or 8″x11″) is preferred. Print on Demand (PoD) prices are higher because they are printed using digital printers. We can get an average idea of the cost of digital printing by noting that a Xerox/photocopy costs Rs.1-2 per page, which helps estimate the cost of PoD books.
The author has the flexibility to set their own price for the book, but it must meet the Minimum Pricing criteria established by the Publisher for distribution through official channels. This ensures that the price covers the production cost. The Minimum Pricing may vary based on market conditions, and Crown Publishing will inform the author if any adjustments are required.
Here’s how royalties are calculated: For sales on Amazon, Flipkart, and other paperback channels (in India): Author's Royalty = MRP - 50% of MRP - Printing Cost. For sales on Books Camel Store (Paperback in India): Author's Royalty = MRP - 15% - Printing Cost. For Play store eBooks: Author's Royalty = 50% of MRP. Royalties exceeding ₹500 are paid to authors upon request by the end of the month. Payments are made via UPI or NEFT to the author’s Indian bank account only.
A 100% royalty is provided to the author on all international print orders and eBook sales. The relevant details are updated on the author’s dashboard. International print copies and eBook sales are reflected in the second week of the month following the sale. Exact royalty figures from such sales cannot be quoted on the site, as they vary from book to book and genre to genre. Once the book is finalized, all pricing and royalty details are updated on the author's dashboard.
Authors can easily order additional copies of their book from their dashboard at the production cost. Taxes and shipping costs are additional. The minimum order quantity is 10 books, although orders for fewer than 30 copies can be placed by paying a small additional processing fee. The production of PoD books takes 5-7 working days, plus shipping time. Therefore, it is recommended to place your order well in advance if you have a specific deadline. Shipping is handled by standard courier partners.
